The country's stunning locations and historic architecture served as perfect stand-ins for ancient Rome, with key scenes filmed at Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara, Valletta Ditch in Saint Michael's Bastion, and the Grand Harbour in Valletta. Director Ridley Scott also built a massive replica of Rome's Colosseum at Fort Ricasoli, which was one-third the size of the actual structure, using digital effects to complete the towering monument. The versatility of Malta's landscapes allowed for the creation of various Roman settings, including gates, colonnades, marketplaces, and statues.
